Extrasylvian aphasias

چکیده
Thumbnail Language disturbances observed in cases of damage outside of the “brain language area” are known as extrasylvian or transcortical aphasia. Preserved language repetition is its distinguishing characteristic. Two major subtypes of extrasylvian aphasia have been traditionally distinguished: extrasylvian motor aphasia and extrasylvian sensory aphasia, each one presenting rather different clinical manifestations. Additionally, striatocapsular and thalamic damage can result not only in speech but also in some language defects. More recently, it has been hypothesized that the cerebellum contributes to cognitive processing, particularly the processing of linguistic information because the cerebellum has reciprocal connections not only with the left inferior frontal gyrus, but also the left lateral temporal cortex.

Vascular aphasias: main characteristics of patients hospitalized in acute stroke units.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Aphasia is frequent in stroke patients and is associated with poor prognosis. However, characteristics and determinants of vascular aphasias remain controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate aphasia characteristics at the acute stage in patients admitted to a stroke unit. METHODS The study was performed in 308 patients consecutively assessed with a standardize...
متن کاملThe role of left perisylvian cortical regions in spelling.
In order to examine the role of left perisylvian cortex in spelling, 13 individuals with lesions in this area were administered a comprehensive spelling battery. Their spelling of regular words, irregular words, and nonwords was compared with that of individuals with extrasylvian damage involving left inferior temporo-occipital cortex and normal controls. Perisylvian patients demonstrated a lex...
متن کاملPerceptual and acoustic correlates of affective prosody repetition in transcortical aphasias
Perceptual judgements and acoustic analyses of affective prosody during sentence repetition were examined in four patients with transcortical aphasias and in two normal controls. Although all aphasic patients had a relative preservation of sentence repetition, perceptual ratings revealed that they repeated using correct affective intonation significantly less frequently than normal control subj...
متن کاملPost-stroke language disorders.
Post-stroke language disorders are frequent and include aphasia, alexia, agraphia and acalculia. There are different definitions of aphasias, but the most widely accepted neurologic and/or neuropsychological definition is that aphasia is a loss or impairment of verbal communication, which occurs as a consequence of brain dysfunction. It manifests as impairment of almost all verbal abilities, e....
متن کاملActivation of intentional mechanisms through utilization of nonsymbolic movements in aphasia rehabilitation.
Intentional mechanisms play an important role in complex self-initiated actions, such as language and gesturing. Deficits demonstrated in nonfluent aphasia may be a result of a disconnection between or damage to the initiation (intention) and production mechanisms in the left hemisphere. In chronic nonfluent aphasias, damaged language production mechanisms in the left hemisphere may switch to h...
